Arctic spring in the world heritage

The arctic spring offers day temperatures above freezing and colder nights that keep the snow from melting. We ski with light backpacks from hut to hut and discover the world heritage around the majestic Ahkka Mountain. From the huts we do daytrips, depending on the group we might climb a smaller peak or relax in a sunny wind protected snow couch. In April, the days are long with only a few hours of darkness but if you stay awake you could get awarded with a northern light show crossing the sky.
Together we travel where the jagged peaks of Sarek national park meet the high plains of Padjelanta. During centuries, the Sami People have lived and worked in the area and followed the reindeers during their migration from summer to winter grassing area. Since 1996 it is protected by UNESCO as a part of Laponia World heritage for its unique combination of nature and culture.

In April, the days are long with only a few hours of darkness

This tour is for you want to visit the three biggest national parks in Sweden and the World Heritage site of Laponia, enjoy the long days of April and sleep in cozy mountain cabins. As most of the food is already delivered to the cabins it allows us to travel with a backpack of only about 8-10kg. The tour requires some skiing skills but no earlier mountain experience.

Laponia Adventures values nutritious food made from real ingredients and put a lot of effort into preparing the menu for this tour. A typical day starts with a Swedish breakfast and in the evening, we cook dinner together in the hut. Our dinners are inspired by local food from the Sami culture as well as more general Swedish food. As long as weather permits we will have a longer break during the day to eat a lighter lunch and re-energize.

During our time in the mountains we stay in cozy cabin with no electricity or running water. We all help with the daily duties as carrying water or chopping wood to the fire. Even if the cabins are simple they provide the most essentials as heat, beds, blankets and everything we need for cooking and eating. Outhouses are often situated within 100 meters from the huts.
We work with local guides who have good knowledge of the culture and history in Laponia. They are all certified guides trained in wilderness first aid or live up to the same standard or higher. On this tour, our support team will deliver food to the huts beforehand. During the days you will be skiing with your guide carrying only lunch, personal clothing and safety equipment.

A normal day offers temperatures from +5 to -10 degrees Celsius with wind speeds around 5-15 m/s. Temperature in April can drop down to below -20.

Tag 1

We will meet you in Ritsem, a small community by the end of a winding mountain road. We have lunch together and check our equipment before continuing across the lake Akkajaure by snowmobile (40 min). We’ll have dinner and stay overnight in cabins.
You can take the local bus from Gällivare to Ritsem! Ask for more information!

Tag 2

We start the day with a generous “mountain breakfast” and continue on skis across the mountain toward the mountain cabin. We cross the highest pass of the trip and we can see far into Padjelantas high plains. The day finishes with an exciting downhill of 250 meters of elevation loss before arriving the hut.
Distance on skis: 18 km, elevation gain/loss: +350/-250, estimated time out skiing: 8h

Tag 3

In Kutjaure we have a day to explore the northern parts of Padjelanta national park. The area is still an undiscovered place for most skiers and we often get the mountain for our self.

Tag 4

We slide down the mountain side to lake Kutjaure continuing across the lake that connects to all three national parks Sarek, Padjelanta and Stora sjöfallet. On the other side of lake Kutjaure we continue up the hill to the mountain cabin where we will stay the following two nights.
Distance on skis: 9 km, elevation gain/loss: +50/-50, estimated time out skiing: 3-4h

Tag 5

We explore Sarek national park on a day trip. Maybe we get the chance to see tracks from foxes and wolverines living in the area. If the weather and the condition of the group allow us to we can climb one of the easier peaks in the area.

Tag 6
KISURIS – AHKKA mehr ...

Surrounded by open white landscape with some scattered mountain birch trees we leave Sarek national park behind us. Our last full day in the mountain takes us through a sparse mountain birch forest contouring the majestic Ahkka Mountain. We finish the day with sauna in Ahkka cabin and a final dinner together.
Distance on skis: 16 km, elevation gain/loss: +0/-150 m, estimated time out skiing: 6h

Tag 7

After finishing the breakfast we get a snowmobile transport over the lake to Ritsem where you will have a chance to shower before starting your travel home. We recommend you to arrange your travel home from Ritsem bus stop. You can take the bus to Gällivare and change to the night train in Gällivare. Or if you want you can choose to stay some more days in “Wildnisdorf Solberget”. There you can make a trip with the reindeer sledge or with snowshoes. In the evening you have the sauna. Contact us for more information about that.
